Somali Ground Forces Commander visits frontlines in Middle Shabelle, reaffirming the government’s commitment to defeating Al-Shabaab and restoring security in central Somalia. General Sahal Abdullahi Omar, head of the Somali National Army’s (SNA) ground forces, made an unannounced visit to frontline positions in the volatile region this week, where he met with troops and local militia leaders engaged in ongoing counterterrorism operations.

The visit comes on the heels of a series of battlefield victories in areas such as Masaajid Ali Gadud, where Somali forces and allied community fighters have recently dislodged Al-Shabaab militants. General Sahal’s presence was aimed at commending the troops for their bravery and encouraging them to maintain momentum in the fight against the al-Qaeda-linked insurgency.

“You are fulfilling a national duty in defending the Somali people and liberating our land from extremist control,” General Sahal told soldiers during his inspection tour. He praised their discipline and resilience, noting that recent gains demonstrate the growing strength and coordination of Somali forces.

The general’s visit also served as a morale booster for frontline units, many of whom have been engaged in intense combat over the past several weeks. According to military officials, the SNA has regained control of several key settlements in Middle Shabelle, disrupting Al-Shabaab’s supply routes and weakening its operational grip on the region.

General Sahal emphasized that the victories are not just tactical but symbolic of Somalia’s broader push toward national stability. “These victories show the army is capable and determined. With continued effort and unity, peace will return to our country,” he said.

The Middle Shabelle region has long been a strategic corridor for Al-Shabaab, allowing the group to move fighters and weapons between central and southern Somalia. The government’s renewed offensive, supported by local militias and international partners, aims to dismantle these networks and restore civilian governance in liberated areas.

Residents in recently secured towns have welcomed the military’s presence, though concerns remain about the potential for retaliatory attacks. Community elders have called for sustained support, including humanitarian aid and infrastructure development, to prevent militants from regaining influence.

General Sahal’s visit also highlighted the importance of collaboration between federal forces and local communities. He urged residents to continue supporting the army by providing intelligence and resisting extremist propaganda. “Victory is only possible when the people and the army stand together,” he said.

The Somali government has pledged to intensify operations in the coming months, with a focus on clearing remaining Al-Shabaab strongholds in Hirshabelle and Galmudug states. The Ministry of Defense has also announced plans to deploy additional troops and enhance logistical support to frontline units.

As Somalia prepares for the 2026 elections, security remains a top priority. The government views the defeat of Al-Shabaab as essential to creating the conditions necessary for democratic participation and economic recovery.

General Sahal’s visit to Middle Shabelle is being seen as a reaffirmation of that commitment—a signal that the fight against terrorism is far from over, but that progress is being made.
