Somali police have arrested the main suspect in the killing of Abdifatah Abdi Osman, widely known as Abdifatah Arab, a former national football player and staff member of Astaan TV. The suspect, identified as Sharif Mohamed Ahmed, was taken into custody in Mogadishu’s Hodan district following the fatal shooting that occurred on Sunday morning.

Authorities confirmed that Ahmed, a security guard, allegedly shot Arab near the Safari apartment building while the former footballer was riding a motorbike on his way to work at Astaan TV. Eyewitnesses reported that the suspect was among soldiers guarding the area at the time of the incident. The killing has sparked outrage among Somali sports and media communities, with calls for swift justice.

Arab, who had played for top Somali clubs including Elman, Banadir Telecom, and Sahafi FC, was also a former captain of Sahafi FC and had represented Somalia’s national team multiple times. His contributions to Somali football earned him widespread recognition, and his untimely death has left the sports fraternity in mourning.

Following the shooting, Arab’s body was initially taken to Erdogan Hospital before being transferred to Madina Hospital for preservation in the mortuary. His family has refused to proceed with burial arrangements until the suspect is formally charged and brought before a court. Banadir regional police chief, Colonel Mahdi Omar Mumin, assured the public that the suspect will face justice, emphasizing the government’s commitment to holding perpetrators accountable.

The Somali National Youth Council and various sports organizations have condemned the killing, describing it as a brutal act against a dedicated public figure who contributed to both the media and sports sectors. Civil society groups have urged authorities to strengthen protections for journalists and athletes working in volatile conditions, citing the increasing risks faced by public figures in Somalia.

Arab’s death has reignited concerns over security in Mogadishu, where targeted killings remain a persistent issue. While authorities have made efforts to curb violence, incidents involving high-profile individuals continue to raise alarm. The Somali government has pledged to enhance security measures and ensure that those responsible for such crimes are prosecuted.

As the investigation unfolds, Somali police are expected to present Ahmed before a competent court in the coming days. The case has drawn significant attention, with many calling for transparency in the judicial process to ensure justice for Arab and his grieving family.
