Security forces intensify efforts in Middle Shabelle as part of Somalia’s largest anti-terror operation in two years
Mogadishu (HOL) – The Somali Police Force has sent troops to the frontlines in the Middle Shabelle region to assist in the ongoing battle against the militant group Al-Shabaab. This deployment is part of a larger effort by the Somali government to eliminate the threat posed by the group and restore peace to the region.
Major General Asad Osman Abdullahi, the Commander of the Somali Police Force, along with his Deputy, General Osman Abdullahi Mohamed, oversaw the departure of the police units from Mogadishu. Addressing the officers before they left, the commanders reminded them of their important role in protecting their country. They urged the police to work closely with other security forces already engaged in the fight and to remain vigilant and disciplined in their mission.
During his speech, Commander Asad reassured the troops that Al-Shabaab consists of young, fearful, and isolated individuals. He emphasized that, unlike the militants, Somali security forces have strong leadership and national support. He urged the officers to remain confident and steadfast in their duty, assuring them that they are fighting for a just cause and have the backing of the Somali people.
He also highlighted the religious significance of their mission, especially during the holy month of Ramadan. He encouraged the troops to see their efforts as a form of worship, as they are working to free their country from violence and oppression. He wished them success and reminded them that their sacrifice would not go unnoticed.
The police officers being deployed to the frontlines have undergone extensive counterterrorism training. Their preparation included both domestic and international programs, particularly through cooperation with the Turkish government. These specialized training programs focused on equipping the officers with skills in combat, intelligence gathering, and counterinsurgency operations, ensuring that they are well-prepared for the challenges they will face.
This deployment follows the recent mobilization of the Somali Custodial Corps to Middle Shabelle. General Mahad Abdirahman, the commander of the Custodial Corps, has also urged his troops to remain strong, disciplined, and committed to their duties. The Custodial Corps, traditionally responsible for managing the country’s prisons, has been playing a crucial role in maintaining security and providing reinforcements in key battle zones.
The Somali government has been ramping up its military operations in Middle Shabelle and Hiiraan, launching one of the most significant offensives against Al-Shabaab in the last two years. This large-scale operation involves multiple security units, including the Somali National Army (SNA), local militias, and international partners. The government has reported that nearly 200 Al-Shabaab militants have been killed in the past two months as part of these efforts.
The reinforcements of the police force and Custodial Corps signal the government’s determination to completely eradicate Al-Shabaab’s presence in the region. Officials believe that weakening the group’s strongholds in Middle Shabelle and Hiiraan will be a major step toward achieving long-term security and stability in Somalia.
The local communities in the affected regions have expressed their support for the government’s efforts. Many residents, who have suffered under Al-Shabaab’s rule, hope that the ongoing operations will lead to lasting peace and the restoration of essential services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
The Somali government has also called upon the international community to continue supporting its fight against terrorism. The government is working closely with allies such as Turkey, the United States, and the African Union, all of whom provide crucial assistance in terms of training, funding, and intelligence sharing.
As the security forces continue their operations, Somali leaders remain optimistic about the country’s future. They believe that with continued military pressure and the support of the Somali people, Al-Shabaab’s influence will continue to decline, paving the way for a more stable and prosperous Somalia.
The additional police reinforcements are expected to significantly strengthen the ongoing efforts to defeat the militant group. Their presence on the frontlines will not only boost the capabilities of existing forces but also demonstrate the Somali government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its people.
