Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to take part in a major international summit focused on global food security. The event, hosted by the United Nations, is bringing together world and regional leaders to find solutions to the growing global food crisis.

The summit, known as the UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake+4 (UNFSS+4), is being held from July 27 to 29, 2025. It builds on progress made during earlier summits in 2021 and 2023. The main goal is to check how far the world has come in transforming food systems and how countries can work together to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

President Hassan Sheikh is expected to speak at the summit. In his speech, he will highlight the serious food insecurity facing Somalia and other countries in the Horn of Africa. He will explain how climate change, droughts, and floods have worsened hunger in the region. These extreme weather events have disrupted farming and livestock production, which are key sources of income and food for many Somali families.

The President will also talk about what Somalia is doing to reduce the risks faced by its people. This includes efforts to build stronger food systems, improve social support for vulnerable communities, and find long-term solutions to climate-related challenges. He is expected to call for stronger international cooperation to help Somalia and other countries in the region build more resilient and sustainable food systems.

In addition to attending the summit, President Hassan Sheikh is also scheduled to meet with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The two leaders will discuss the state of bilateral relations between Somalia and Ethiopia. They are also expected to talk about the broader situation in the Horn of Africa, a region that has been affected by political tensions, conflicts, and climate-related crises.

The UN summit comes at a time when food insecurity is rising in many parts of the world. In Somalia alone, millions of people are in need of food assistance due to repeated droughts and high food prices. Children and women are especially vulnerable to hunger and malnutrition. Many communities rely heavily on international aid to survive.

The goal of the UNFSS+4 summit is not only to discuss these challenges but also to find practical ways to solve them. The meeting gives countries a chance to share ideas, build partnerships, and find new resources to support food system changes. It also encourages governments to stay committed to reaching the global goals set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Leaders at the summit are expected to focus on several key areas: improving food production, making agriculture more climate-friendly, supporting small farmers, and reducing hunger. There will also be discussions on how to use science and technology to make food systems more efficient and fair.

President Hassan Sheikh’s presence at the summit underlines Somalia’s commitment to working with international partners to improve food security and respond to the impacts of climate change. His meetings with other leaders are expected to strengthen regional cooperation and help build a more stable and food-secure Horn of Africa.

As the summit continues in Addis Ababa, many are hopeful that real progress will be made. For countries like Somalia, the stakes are high—but so is the determination to build a better, more resilient future.
