Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended the state funeral of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga in Nairobi on Friday, joining thousands of mourners and several heads of state who gathered to pay their final respects to one of Africa’s most influential political figures. The ceremony, held at a national stadium in the Kenyan capital, marked the culmination of days of mourning for a man who shaped Kenya’s political landscape for decades and inspired many across the continent.
President Mohamud stood alongside regional leaders, dignitaries, and citizens from all walks of life to honour Odinga’s remarkable legacy. In his tribute, the Somali leader described Odinga as a “towering statesman” who dedicated his life to democracy, justice, and public service — values that resonated far beyond Kenya’s borders. Somalia had earlier expressed condolences following Odinga’s death on October 15, with President Mohamud emphasizing that his contribution to freedom and governance in Africa would be remembered for generations.
Raila Odinga, who passed away at the age of 80 in India while receiving medical treatment, was a central figure in Kenya’s political scene for more than half a century. Born in 1945, he was known for his resilience, courage, and commitment to political reform. He served as Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013, a period that followed Kenya’s post-election violence and required difficult national reconciliation efforts. Many remember him as a unifying voice who worked to heal divisions and strengthen democratic institutions.
Following his death, Kenya entered a period of deep mourning. His body was flown back to Nairobi on Thursday, arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to an emotional and chaotic scene. Thousands of supporters defied security restrictions to catch a glimpse of the plane carrying his remains, with some even breaching the runway area in an outpouring of grief and admiration. The massive crowds reflected the depth of Odinga’s influence and the affection many Kenyans held for him.
The government had organized a series of national events to honour Odinga’s memory, including a public viewing of his body at Parliament Buildings. However, the event was cut short after crowds overwhelmed security arrangements, making it difficult for authorities to maintain order. Despite these disruptions, the spirit of unity and remembrance remained strong throughout the country, as citizens from different communities came together to celebrate the life and legacy of a man often described as the “people’s champion.”
At the state funeral, prayers, songs, and tributes filled the air as world leaders, political allies, and family members shared their memories. Many recalled Odinga’s steadfast fight for multiparty democracy, his imprisonment for political activism, and his unwavering belief that Kenya could become a fairer, freer nation. He was also praised for his role in shaping regional dialogue, especially through his efforts to promote peace and cooperation within the East African Community.

President Mohamud’s attendance at the funeral underscored the close ties between Somalia and Kenya — neighbours that share both challenges and aspirations for stability and development in the Horn of Africa. His presence also reflected a broader recognition of Odinga’s impact as a Pan-African leader who championed democracy not just in Kenya but across the continent.
As Kenya and Africa bid farewell to Raila Amolo Odinga, his story remains a testament to endurance, sacrifice, and the pursuit of justice.
