Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud addressed a joint session of Parliament on Saturday, marking the commencement of its sixth session in Mogadishu. His speech focused on the nation’s security situation, ongoing military operations, electoral reforms, and a significant technological milestone for Somalia.
The President emphasized Somalia’s continued efforts to combat terrorism, specifically mentioning ongoing military operations against ISIS and Al-Shabaab in Puntland and south-central Somalia. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering support for Puntland’s security forces, who are actively engaged in battles against what he described as “Khawarij militants.”
Acknowledging progress in military restructuring, President Mohamud highlighted the reestablishment of Somalia’s Air Force and Navy. He stressed that these advancements would enhance national security, enabling Somalia to defend its airspace and territorial waters. The President also underscored the government’s commitment to curbing illegal fishing, a persistent issue affecting the nation’s coastal economy.
Counterterrorism efforts were a central theme of his speech, with the President noting substantial progress in clearing Al-Shabaab strongholds. He assured the nation that securing liberated areas remains a top priority, ensuring stability and peace for affected communities.
In a groundbreaking announcement, President Mohamud revealed Somalia’s plans to establish its first satellite launch center, marking a historic moment for the Horn of Africa. He declared that the country’s first satellite would be launched by the end of the year, positioning Somalia at the forefront of technological advancements in the region. The President confirmed that Turkey is spearheading the construction of the facility, which will serve as a launch site for future space missions.
The speech also touched on Somalia’s electoral reforms, as the nation transitions toward a one-person, one-vote system. This move is aimed at restoring citizens’ direct voting rights and strengthening democratic governance. The President reassured the public that preparations for elections are progressing smoothly, with significant steps taken to ensure a transparent and fair electoral process.
The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) recently announced that local council elections are scheduled for June. The elections will cover multiple regions, including Gedo and Khaatumo. According to NIEC Chairperson Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan, approximately 800 polling stations have been identified across Mogadishu, Hirshabelle, Galmudug, Jubaland—including Gedo—South West State, and the interim SSC-Khaatumo administration. These measures aim to facilitate a smooth and inclusive voting process for all eligible citizens.
As Somalia continues to navigate its political and security challenges, President Mohamud’s address reflected a strong commitment to national stability, technological progress, and democratic governance. The nation’s efforts to combat terrorism, enhance security, and advance its electoral framework demonstrate a forward-looking approach to sustainable development and peace.
