Somalia is celebrating a major moment of national pride after referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan was named the CAF Best Male Referee for 2025. The award was presented during a ceremony held at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Rabat, Morocco, marking a historic achievement not only for Artan but also for the country’s sports community. His recognition comes after a year of officiating several high-profile matches across the continent, earning him widespread respect and admiration within African football.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated Artan, describing the achievement as a milestone that strengthens Somalia’s reputation on the international stage. He said Artan represents the determination, professionalism, and rising talent of Somali youth. According to the President, Artan’s win shows the world that Somalia is home to skilled and dedicated individuals capable of shining in global competitions. He praised Artan’s commitment and highlighted how his success brings honour to the entire nation.
Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre also expressed pride in Artan’s accomplishment, calling it a powerful demonstration of Somali talent and ingenuity. He explained that Artan’s journey and success provide inspiration for young Somalis everywhere. The Prime Minister noted that Artan’s hard work, discipline, and perseverance have not only propelled his career forward but also uplifted the Somali flag in international sports.
This achievement is even more significant because Artan has already made history in global football. He is the first Somali referee to be selected for a FIFA World Cup tournament and one of only three centre referees chosen from Africa for the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2025. Notably, he is the only referee selected from Sub-Saharan Africa, making his appointment a remarkable honour for the region. His inclusion in the FIFA competition shows how far he has come and reflects the trust that global football authorities have placed in his abilities.
Artan’s recognition also comes at a time when Somali sports figures are increasingly gaining visibility and breaking new ground. His success encourages young people across the country to pursue their dreams, especially in fields where Somalis have historically been underrepresented. For many fans and aspiring referees, Artan’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that dedication, discipline, and continuous self-improvement can lead to international success.
The award ceremony also honoured Uganda’s Nabadda, who won the CAF Best Female Referee award. Together, the two referees represent the progress being made in African officiating, where more officials are earning recognition beyond their home countries. Their achievements highlight the growing professionalism in the region’s football structures.
For Somalia, Artan’s success is more than an individual accomplishment. It is a source of national pride, a symbol of possibility, and a reminder that Somali talent can thrive on global platforms despite challenges. His journey continues to uplift the spirits of the nation and motivate countless youth to pursue excellence in sports and beyond.
