Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Thursday welcomed Djibouti’s Foreign Minister, Abdiqadir Hussein Omar, in Mogadishu during the minister’s first official visit to Somalia.

The meeting reflected the close and long-standing relationship between the two neighboring countries, which have shared political, security, and cultural ties for decades.

During the discussions, Minister Omar conveyed greetings and a special message from Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh. The message reaffirmed Djibouti’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s stability, peace, and development.

President Mohamud expressed his gratitude for Djibouti’s consistent support over the years. He emphasized Somalia’s determination to strengthen its partnership with Djibouti, especially at a time when the country is pushing forward with reforms and security operations.

A central point of the talks was Somalia’s ongoing military operations against Al-Shabaab and ISIS-linked groups. The president briefed the Djiboutian minister on recent progress made by Somali security forces, supported by international and regional partners. He stressed that defeating terrorism is a priority for Somalia’s future, and that cooperation with allies like Djibouti is crucial for success.

Minister Omar praised Somalia’s efforts in reclaiming territories from terrorist groups and acknowledged the sacrifices made by Somali security forces. He also highlighted the important role Djibouti continues to play as a troop-contributing country to the African Union mission in Somalia. Djibouti’s soldiers have been deployed in central Somalia, where they work alongside Somali forces to stabilize liberated areas and protect communities.

Both leaders agreed to expand security cooperation, deepen political dialogue, and explore new opportunities for regional collaboration. They noted that strong ties between Somalia and Djibouti not only benefit their two nations but also contribute to wider stability in the Horn of Africa.

The two sides described their relationship as “deep-rooted and strategic,” emphasizing shared goals of peace, economic growth, and regional integration. Somalia and Djibouti also pledged to continue working closely within regional organizations to promote collective security and development.

This visit marked an important step in reinforcing the historical friendship between the two countries. It underscored Djibouti’s role as one of Somalia’s closest allies, both politically and militarily, and Somalia’s commitment to nurturing these ties as it works toward long-term stability.

The meeting ended with a mutual understanding that Somalia and Djibouti will stand together in addressing common challenges and building a safer, stronger future for their people.
