Somalia and Ethiopia have launched a high-level technical review meeting in Addis Ababa to assess progress made since their first Joint Ministerial Committee meeting in Mogadishu. The meeting began on Friday and brings together senior officials from both governments to evaluate how far they’ve come in implementing joint agreements and to map out the next steps.
The Somali delegation is led by the Director General for East African Social Affairs, and discussions are focused on strengthening cooperation, expanding trade, and deepening diplomatic ties.
Main Focus of the Meeting
The talks aim to:
-
Review the progress of previously agreed commitments.
-
Identify areas where more effort is needed.
-
Strengthen the relationship between the people of both countries.
-
Boost trade and economic partnerships.
-
Promote stability and prosperity in the region.
Both governments see this meeting as a crucial opportunity to move from words to action. They are determined to turn past promises into real progress for their people.
Background of the Renewed Talks
The meeting comes after months of strained relations between the two countries. Tensions rose earlier when Ethiopia signed a controversial agreement with Somaliland to access a port. Somalia strongly opposed the deal, saying it violated its sovereignty, as Somaliland is a region within Somalia.
This disagreement caused a major diplomatic rift. However, with Turkey stepping in as a mediator, both sides reached a breakthrough agreement that calmed tensions and opened the door for renewed cooperation.
Key Areas of Cooperation
Under the new agreement, Somalia and Ethiopia have agreed to:
-
Restore full diplomatic ties.
-
Work together on infrastructure projects.
-
Promote investment and trade.
-
Build a peaceful and stable Horn of Africa.
These efforts are part of a broader plan to improve the lives of citizens in both countries and ensure peace in the region.
A Step Toward a Stronger Future
Officials from both countries say this meeting is an important step toward building a stronger partnership. By working together, they hope to create better opportunities for their people and promote long-term stability.
The talks highlight a shared commitment to putting past disagreements aside and focusing on building a more united and prosperous future for Somalia, Ethiopia, and the wider Horn of Africa.
