Somalia and Pakistan have taken a significant step toward deepening their trade and cultural relations. In a high-profile meeting on Monday, United Business Group (UBG) Secretary General Zafar Bakhtawari met with Somalia’s Ambassador Sheikh Noor Muhammad Hassan at the Somali Embassy in Islamabad. The gathering underscored mutual commitment to fostering stronger economic ties between the two nations.

A Diplomatic Push for Trade Growth

Ambassador Sheikh Noor Muhammad Hassan, a seasoned politician with a history of serving in multiple Somali ministries, reiterated his dedication to enhancing bilateral relations during his tenure in Pakistan. “Strengthening trade relations between Somalia and Pakistan is my top priority,” the ambassador said. He emphasized Somalia’s strategic advantage as a seaport nation, offering Pakistan an opportunity to expand its maritime trade with other African countries.

The ambassador invited Zafar Bakhtawari to visit Somalia with a trade delegation to explore potential business opportunities. Highlighting the improved security situation in Somalia, Sheikh Noor expressed optimism about fostering new partnerships and collaborations.

    Pakistan’s Role in Expanding Trade

Zafar Bakhtawari echoed the ambassador’s sentiments, describing Somalia as a vital and resource-rich country in Africa. “Enhancing trade with Somalia can deepen mutual relations and open new avenues for global trade,” he stated. As the Secretary General of UBG, Bakhtawari introduced the organization as a representative body of Pakistan’s business community, led by Patron-in-Chief S.M. Tanveer.

Bakhtawari highlighted the growing demand for Pakistani products in the Somali market, stressing the need to establish platforms to connect business communities from both countries. “Pakistan’s business community is ready to provide all possible cooperation to strengthen ties with Somalia,” he added.

    Leveraging Somalia’s Strategic Location

Somalia’s location along key maritime routes positions it as a hub for regional and international trade. The ambassador emphasized this unique advantage, inviting Pakistan to capitalize on Somalia’s geographical benefits to strengthen its maritime trade with other African nations.

Waqar Bakhtawari, former president of the Chakwal Chamber of Commerce and chairman of Ba-Waqar Pakistan, expressed gratitude for the ambassador’s efforts. “Closer relations between the people of Somalia and Pakistan can create new opportunities for global trade,” he remarked.

    Building Direct Connections Between Traders

Roohail Anwar Butt, an executive member of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), underlined the quality and popularity of Pakistani products in the Somali market. He advocated for establishing direct connections between traders from both nations, making trade more accessible and beneficial.

Butt stressed the importance of creating business-friendly environments, noting that direct engagement could significantly reduce trade barriers. “Both nations can achieve mutual economic benefits by simplifying trade processes and enhancing communication between business communities,” he said.

    Mutual Commitment to Growth

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to fostering stronger trade and cultural relations. The presence of prominent figures, including Deputy Head of Mission Yasin Mohamud Mire and Counsellor Jama Hassan, highlighted the importance of this partnership for both countries.

Ambassador Sheikh Noor expressed his gratitude for Pakistan’s hospitality and support, pledging to work tirelessly to enhance relations during his tenure. Meanwhile, Pakistani officials welcomed the opportunity to collaborate and explore Somalia’s untapped potential in various sectors.

    The Road Ahead

As Somalia continues to stabilize and rebuild, partnerships with countries like Pakistan are expected to play a pivotal role in its economic growth. By leveraging each other’s strengths and fostering direct connections, Somalia and Pakistan can unlock new opportunities for trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
