Somalia and Tanzania have signed a new agreement aimed at improving cooperation on migration and making it easier for citizens of both countries to travel. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Somalia’s Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail, also known as Fartaag, and Tanzania’s Minister of Home Affairs, Patrobas Paschal Katambi. Senior immigration officials from both sides attended the signing ceremony, showing the importance both governments attach to the new partnership.
The agreement focuses on strengthening coordination between the two countries in managing migration and securing their borders. Officials said the deal will help the relevant agencies share information, improve systems, and work more closely together to ensure safe and organized movement of people.
One of the key highlights of the agreement is the easing of visa procedures. Diplomats and government officials from both countries will now be able to travel without visas. For ordinary passport holders, visas will be issued within 24 hours, making the process faster and more convenient. Leaders from both nations believe this step will remove unnecessary delays and encourage more interaction between their citizens.
Somalia’s internal security minister said the agreement is expected to boost tourism, investment, and education exchanges. He noted that easier travel arrangements would also support business activities by allowing entrepreneurs and traders to move more freely between the two countries. According to him, the partnership will not only improve institutional cooperation but also strengthen people-to-people connections.
The two countries are also preparing to launch direct flights, an initiative that was agreed upon last year. Once operational, these flights are expected to make travel quicker and more affordable, further increasing trade and social ties. Direct air links are seen as a major step toward improving economic cooperation and opening up new opportunities for businesses and investors.
Both governments have pledged to quickly implement the terms of the agreement. They emphasized that faster visa processing will play a key role in promoting commercial activities and encouraging closer regional integration. Somali authorities described Tanzania as an important partner in efforts to promote regional cooperation and stability. They reaffirmed Mogadishu’s commitment to expanding collaboration in several areas, including security, trade, investment, and aviation. Tanzanian officials also expressed optimism that the agreement would strengthen diplomatic ties and deepen bilateral relations.
