The Somali government, working together with the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), has carried out two airstrikes targeting members of the Islamic State (ISIS) group in the Bari region of Puntland.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the Ministry of Information, the first airstrike took place on May 31, about 75 kilometers south of the port city of Bosaso. The second strike followed on June 1, about 72 kilometers south of the same city. These areas are known to be remote and mountainous, often used by militant groups to hide and plan attacks.
The government did not provide specific information about how many militants were killed or injured in the airstrikes. However, officials said the strikes are part of a larger strategy to weaken ISIS in Somalia and prevent the group from launching attacks on civilians, Somali forces, and international partners.
In its statement, the Somali government said the operations were aimed at “disrupting the ability of the ISIS-Somalia Khawarij group to plan and execute terrorist attacks.” The term “Khawarij” is often used by Somali authorities to describe extremist groups that carry out violence in the name of religion.
ISIS has a presence in parts of northeastern Somalia, especially in Puntland’s rugged areas. Although the group is smaller compared to Al-Shabaab, another major terrorist group in the country, it has remained active by recruiting fighters, collecting illegal taxes, and launching occasional attacks.
The Somali government has been stepping up its efforts to eliminate terrorist groups through military operations, especially in cooperation with international allies like the United States. AFRICOM has been a key partner in this fight, providing support through air surveillance, intelligence, and targeted airstrikes.
Officials in Somalia expressed their appreciation to AFRICOM for its ongoing assistance. The statement also highlighted the importance of international cooperation in fighting terrorism, especially in areas where militant groups pose a serious threat to peace and security.
“The Somali government thanks AFRICOM for its continued support in air operations targeting ISIS and Al-Shabaab,” the statement read. “These efforts are crucial in helping us maintain stability and protect our people.”
The government also emphasized its commitment to working with local communities to identify and eliminate threats. It believes that lasting peace can only be achieved by combining military efforts with support from the people and collaboration with international partners.
In recent years, Somalia has launched several military campaigns against terrorist groups with the help of allies like the U.S., Turkey, and the African Union. These operations have had some success in pushing militants out of key towns and reducing their ability to organize large-scale attacks.
Despite the challenges, Somali officials remain hopeful. They believe that continued pressure on terrorist groups through airstrikes, ground operations, and community engagement will eventually lead to a safer and more stable country.
The recent airstrikes in Puntland are part of this ongoing effort to defeat ISIS and other extremist groups. By targeting their hideouts and disrupting their plans, the government aims to send a clear message: Somalia will not tolerate terrorism and will do whatever it takes to protect its people.
