Somali Minister of Internal Security, Gen. Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, met with Uganda’s Minister of Security, Hon. Jim Katugugu Muhwezi, in Kampala on Tuesday to discuss ways to enhance bilateral security cooperation.
The talks centered on joint efforts in counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, and capacity-building programs for security forces in both countries.
Minister Fartaag expressed his gratitude to the Government of Uganda for its continued support to Somalia, particularly its vital contribution to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). He emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration between the two ministries to promote peace and regional stability.
For his part, Minister Muhwezi commended Somalia’s ongoing efforts to reinforce national security and rebuild its institutions, reaffirming Uganda’s commitment to continued cooperation in maintaining stability across the Horn of Africa.
The meeting followed a recent joint operation in which Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) troops serving under AUSSOM, in coordination with the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF), successfully recaptured Awdheegle town in the Lower Shabelle region.
The operation, concluded on Sunday, October 5, 2025, marked a significant milestone in the third phase of Operation Silent Storm. According to military sources, the campaign cleared Awdheegle of Al-Shabaab fighters, dismantling their trenches, tunnels, and hideouts as joint forces continue efforts to weaken the group’s presence in southern Somalia.
