Somalia’s Director General of Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA), Mustafa Sheikh Cali Dhuxulow, recently visited Germany for a high-level meeting with Dr. Dieter Romann, the President of Germany’s Federal Police Headquarters. The goal of the visit was to boost cooperation between the two countries on migration management and border security.

The meeting brought together senior officials from both countries and focused on several key issues: improving coordination between their migration and border institutions, enhancing border control technologies, and raising the global credibility of the Somali passport.

According to a statement from Somalia’s ICA, the talks aimed to address shared challenges while supporting safe and legal travel for Somali citizens. One major priority discussed was how Somalia can strengthen the recognition of its passport internationally, making travel easier and more secure for its people.

The two sides also talked about how they can work together to tackle organized crime and human trafficking, two issues that often cross international borders. Improving the infrastructure of Somalia’s international airports was another key topic, along with training and capacity-building programs for Somali immigration officers.

Germany offered to share its experience and best practices in managing migration, especially how it uses technology to keep borders secure while allowing for efficient and legal movement of people. The Somali delegation was given detailed briefings on Germany’s migration systems and how they operate.

As part of the visit, Dhuxulow and his team toured Berlin International Airport. There, they observed how Germany uses advanced technology in its daily border operations, including digital systems for passport control and security checks. Somalia hopes to apply some of these systems as it works to modernize its own border security and airport procedures.

Germany is home to a large Somali diaspora and is one of the European Union’s key countries in terms of hosting Somali migrants. This makes cooperation between the two countries on migration and mobility a high priority. Both governments emphasized the need for a secure and orderly migration process that benefits both Somali citizens and the host country.

The visit reflects Somalia’s growing efforts to improve how it manages migration and borders. It also shows the country’s commitment to learning from global partners and improving its international relationships through shared goals.

In summary, the Somali delegation’s visit to Germany was an important step toward improving border security, passport credibility, and migration cooperation. With Germany offering support in areas like infrastructure development and personnel training, Somalia is looking to upgrade its systems and ensure safer, more reliable travel for its citizens
