Somalia has officially introduced a new electronic visa (E-Visa) and electronic travel authorization system (eTAS) as part of its efforts to modernize immigration services. The system, which becomes mandatory for all foreign visitors starting September 1, 2025, allows travelers to apply for visas online through the official government portal: www.evisa.gov.so.
The new platform will replace the traditional paper-based visa process, making it easier, faster, and more transparent for people visiting Somalia. According to officials, travelers will be able to apply from anywhere in the world and receive their visa electronically within a short period of time, eliminating the need to visit embassies or consulates.
Speaking during the launch, Isaaq Hassan Taakow, Director of Foreigners and Immigration at the Immigration and Citizenship Authority (ICA), said the E-Visa system represents a major step toward simplifying travel while ensuring accountability. He noted that staff members have undergone specialized training to manage the system effectively, guaranteeing both efficiency and transparency in processing applications.
Authorities highlighted several key benefits of the new digital system. Firstly, it is expected to strengthen national security by enabling better monitoring of travelers entering and leaving the country. The platform will also improve data protection, ensuring sensitive personal information is stored and handled securely.
In addition, the system is designed to boost economic growth by making it easier for business people, investors, and tourists to visit Somalia. By removing bureaucratic hurdles and long waiting times, officials believe the new process will encourage more foreign participation in Somalia’s economy and increase visitor numbers.
Another important feature is financial accountability. Visa fees will now be paid directly into the Ministry of Finance accounts, a move aimed at increasing government revenue transparency and reducing the risk of mismanagement. Internal Security Minister Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag explained that this measure will help the government maintain accurate financial records while ensuring that funds generated through visas are used effectively for public services.
The introduction of the E-Visa and eTAS also places Somalia in line with other countries that have already embraced digital immigration systems. Many governments around the world are turning to online visa services as part of broader modernization efforts, improving governance and enhancing the experience for international travelers.
For Somalia, this rollout is more than just a new way of processing visas—it is also a symbol of progress and stability. After years of challenges, the country is working to improve institutions, strengthen public trust, and open itself up to the world in a secure and organized way. By embracing technology, Somalia is showing its commitment to digital transformation and good governance.
Travelers using the new system will need to visit the official portal, fill out an application form, upload required documents, and make payments online. Once approved, the visa will be sent electronically, allowing visitors to travel without the delays often associated with traditional visa applications. Officials are also advising travelers to apply in advance of their trip to avoid last-minute inconveniences.
In summary, the new E-Visa and eTAS system is a landmark step for Somalia’s immigration services. It promises to make traveling to the country more convenient, protect sensitive information, ensure government revenue transparency, and strengthen overall national security. At the same time, it demonstrates Somalia’s determination to embrace modern solutions and provide better services to citizens and foreigners alike.
As the September 1, 2025 deadline approaches, foreign travelers planning to visit Somalia are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new requirements and apply online for their visas. This transformation marks the beginning of a new era in Somalia’s immigration system—one that is digital, secure, and built to support the country’s future growth.
