Former Somali Attorney General Abdullahi Dahir Bare has passed away in Mogadishu, the Office of the Attorney General confirmed on Wednesday night. His death marks the end of a long and respected career in Somalia’s justice system that spanned more than five decades.
In a statement, the current Attorney General, Sulayman Mohamed, expressed deep sorrow over Bare’s passing and extended condolences to his family, relatives, colleagues, and the Somali people. He described the late Bare as a man of integrity and dedication who devoted his life to serving justice and strengthening the rule of law in Somalia.
Abdullahi Dahir Bare was born in 1940 in Luuq District, located in the Gedo region of southern Somalia. From a young age, he showed a strong interest in law and public service, which eventually led him to become one of the first generation of Somali judges. He officially began his judicial career on April 17, 1967, joining the nation’s justice system during its early years of independence.
Over the decades, Bare served in several key judicial and legal positions across the country. He worked as the chairman of the Beledweyne District Court, Hargeisa District Court, Togdheer Regional Court, and Benadir Regional Court, among other posts. His experience and leadership in these roles earned him widespread respect within the legal community and among Somali citizens.
As a legal professional who served under multiple administrations, Bare played an instrumental role in shaping and rehabilitating Somalia’s justice and judiciary systems. His work was particularly significant during periods of national recovery when the country faced political and institutional challenges. Many of his colleagues remember him as a mentor who upheld fairness, discipline, and professionalism, inspiring generations of Somali lawyers and judges.
Beyond his official duties, Bare was known for his humility, wisdom, and commitment to public service. He believed deeply in the importance of justice as a foundation for peace and good governance, and he remained active in legal and judicial matters long after his retirement from formal office.
Attorney General Sulayman Mohamed, while mourning his predecessor, prayed for Allah’s mercy upon him, asking that Bare be granted a place in Paradise. He also prayed for patience and strength for the late judge’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Abdullahi Dahir Bare leaves behind a lasting legacy in Somalia’s judicial history — one built on service, dedication, and faith. His contributions helped shape the country’s legal system and paved the way for many who followed in his footsteps. His passing is not only a loss to his family but also to the broader Somali legal fraternity and the nation he served so faithfully.
