Somalia has called on Germany to halt forced deportations of Somali nationals, emphasizing a preference for voluntary repatriation. This appeal was made by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who held talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin on Wednesday. The discussions focused on deportation policies, as well as cooperation in security, vocational training, and economic growth.
Open Doors for Voluntary Return
President Mohamud expressed that Somalia is open to welcoming its citizens back if they have exhausted asylum options in Germany and wish to return voluntarily. “They are welcome back to their homeland to reunite with their families and reintegrate into their communities,” Mohamud stated. He encouraged voluntary repatriation as a positive path for Somali migrants who could contribute to Somalia’s development and progress.
Focus on Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Beyond deportation policies, Mohamud and Scholz discussed avenues to deepen Somali-German relations. The Somali president highlighted opportunities in vocational training and bolstering security to support Somali growth. The talks underscored Somalia’s commitment to long-term partnerships with European nations.
