The Somali government has welcomed the regional and international efforts that led to the peace agreement between Hamas and Israel, reached on Thursday in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. The deal, brokered with the involvement of Egypt, the United States, and other partners, marks a major step toward ending the two-year conflict that has devastated Gaza and strained relations across the Middle East.

According to details of the agreement, the two sides have committed to an immediate ceasefire, the delivery of humanitarian aid to affected areas, the release of prisoners and detainees, and the resumption of political talks under international supervision. The move is seen as a crucial opportunity to end one of the bloodiest and most prolonged wars in recent memory, which has left tens of thousands of Palestinians dead and displaced many more.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it hopes the peace deal will serve as a genuine step toward achieving lasting peace and justice in the region. “Somalia hopes that this agreement will serve as a genuine step towards achieving a just and comprehensive peace that ends the suffering of the Palestinian people and consolidates security and stability in the region,” the ministry said.

The Somali government reaffirmed its consistent support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to establish an independent and sovereign state. The ministry noted that this long-standing position reflects Somalia’s dedication to the principles of justice, dignity, and peaceful coexistence among nations. It also emphasized the country’s belief in upholding international law and supporting efforts that protect human rights and foster stability in the Middle East.

“The principled stance of Somalia reflects our firm commitment to international legitimacy and to the values of dignity, justice, and peaceful coexistence,” the statement added. Somalia further expressed its full support for all initiatives aimed at preserving human dignity and contributing to a fair and lasting resolution of the Palestinian cause.

The ongoing conflict, which erupted two years ago following attacks launched by Hamas, has significantly reshaped regional politics. It has drawn in regional actors such as Iran, Yemen, and Lebanon, heightening tensions and expanding the scope of the war. The violence has also deepened Israel’s international isolation and complicated its relationships with key global partners.

The war has taken a devastating toll, with more than 67,000 Palestinians reported killed and countless others injured or displaced. The destruction of infrastructure, homes, and hospitals has worsened the humanitarian situation in Gaza, leaving the population in dire need of aid.

The Sharm El-Sheikh agreement has been hailed internationally as a breakthrough toward restoring peace and stability. U.S. President Donald Trump, who played a key role in pushing for the settlement, has reportedly urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to embrace the deal as a chance to rebuild trust and restore calm.

Celebrations broke out in both Israel and Palestine following the announcement, as people expressed hope that this truce could finally bring an end to years of violence, fear, and displacement. While challenges remain in implementing the terms of the agreement, many see it as a rare and much-needed opportunity for a fresh start — one that could pave the way for renewed dialogue and a long-term political solution to the conflict.

Somalia’s expression of support reflects a broader regional desire for peace and stability, as nations in the Horn of Africa and the Middle East increasingly recognize the importance of unity and diplomacy in resolving conflicts. For Somalia, this marks both a reaffirmation of its solidarity with the Palestinian people and a commitment to promoting peace through international cooperation.
