On Monday evening, Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar, hosted a special dinner in Mogadishu for eight newly accredited ambassadors. The event came shortly after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi officially received the ambassadors’ credentials.
During his speech at the dinner, Minister Omar spoke about Somalia’s increasing international engagement and highlighted the country’s recent progress. He noted Somalia’s role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, calling it a major step forward in gaining global recognition and influence.
“Somalia’s journey of recovery has been made stronger by the ongoing support from the international community,” Omar said. “We are grateful to our friends, allies, and sisterly nations who continue to stand with us.”
He emphasized the importance of strong diplomatic relations and called on the countries represented by the new ambassadors to deepen cooperation with Somalia. Omar encouraged the reopening of embassies in Mogadishu as a sign of renewed trust and commitment to building strong ties.
“A greater international presence in our capital is not only a symbol of progress but also a shared investment in peace, stability, and mutual growth,” he said.
The eight ambassadors who presented their credentials last week represent South Korea, Iraq, Côte d’Ivoire, Venezuela, Mexico, Mauritania, Ghana, and Ethiopia. These countries now join the growing list of nations strengthening diplomatic relations with Somalia.
Minister Omar expressed appreciation to the ambassadors for accepting their new roles and attending the dinner. He wished them success in their diplomatic work, stressing that Somalia is open and ready for closer cooperation across political, economic, and cultural areas.
The event provided an opportunity for the ambassadors to meet with Somali government officials and discuss ways to enhance partnerships. It also showcased Somalia’s commitment to improving foreign relations and rebuilding trust with the international community after years of conflict.
