The Federal Government of Somalia has issued a strong statement condemning the recent terrorist attack targeting President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s convoy near the El Gaabta checkpoint in Mogadishu. In a press briefing, government spokesperson Abdirahman Yusuf Al-Adala expressed sorrow for the tragic loss of lives and unwavering resolve in the face of extremism, while reaffirming the country’s dedication to combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
The roadside bomb attack, carried out by Al-Shabaab on March 17, 2025, claimed the lives of 10 people, including seven members of the presidential guard. Several others were injured, and nearby properties sustained considerable damage. President Mohamud, who was en route to Adan Yabal to support military efforts against Al-Shabaab in Middle Shabelle, escaped unharmed and continued his journey undeterred.
Spokesperson Al-Adala described the attack as an act of cowardice aimed at disrupting Somalia’s progress and called on Somalis to stand united against extremist threats. “This heinous act seeks to undermine peace, but it will not deter us. Somalia stands firm in its determination to rid our land of Al-Shabaab’s terror and rebuild our nation,” he stated.
The Somali government’s statement emphasized the critical role of regional and international collaboration in the fight against terrorism. Al-Adala extended appreciation to Somalia’s allies, including the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), the United Nations, and global partners, for their continued support. Somalia’s security forces have recently made significant advances in reclaiming territory from Al-Shabaab, particularly in Middle Shabelle and Hirshabelle. President Mohamud’s visit to Adan Yabal, which the government has described as a strategic show of resilience, was aimed at bolstering troop morale and assessing progress in the ongoing military operations. The international community has widely condemned the attack, with many leaders expressing solidarity with Somalia. UN Secretary-General António Guterres and African Union Chairperson Azali Assoumani released statements condemning the violence and pledging continued support for Somalia’s counterterrorism efforts. The United States and several European Union nations have also reaffirmed their commitment to assisting Somalia in achieving peace and stability.
As the Somali government navigates this challenging period, it remains focused on addressing the root causes of extremism, including poverty, unemployment, and the lack of educational opportunities. Officials have reiterated the importance of pairing military efforts with ideological campaigns aimed at countering Al-Shabaab’s influence and fostering resilience among vulnerable communities.
