Somaliland security forces on Wednesday carried out a planned military operation in the Salal region that resulted in the deaths of two armed suspects and the arrest of several others, following the recent killing of two civilians in the area. The operation was launched after days of heightened security and investigations aimed at tracking down those responsible for the earlier attack that shocked local communities.
According to a statement released by the Somaliland armed forces, the operation took place in the Indho-Biraale area, where intelligence reports had indicated that the suspects were hiding. Troops moved into the area as part of a coordinated mission designed to prevent further violence and restore calm. When security forces encountered the group, clashes broke out, leading to an exchange of fire.
The military said two of the suspected gunmen were killed during the confrontation, while four others were wounded. Several additional suspects were arrested at the scene. Security forces also recovered illegal weapons, including AK-47 rifles, which authorities believe were used to threaten civilians and undermine public safety in the region. The seized weapons were taken into custody as evidence, and the arrested suspects are expected to face further questioning.
In its statement, the armed forces emphasized that the operation was carefully planned and conducted with the goal of protecting civilians and ensuring long-term security. Officials said those arrested would be handed over to the relevant legal authorities for investigation and possible prosecution in line with Somaliland’s laws. The military stressed that due process would be followed as the case moves forward.
The security operation comes after the killing of two civilians earlier this month in Salal, an incident that caused fear and anger among residents. The deaths prompted authorities to increase patrols, tighten security measures, and launch a manhunt for those believed to be responsible. While police have not publicly identified the suspects or disclosed the motive behind the killings, officials have described the incident as a serious threat to peace and stability in the region.
Local authorities said the latest operation is part of a broader effort to restore order and prevent similar incidents from happening again. Security agencies have been instructed to remain vigilant, particularly in rural and remote areas where armed groups may attempt to hide or operate. Officials warned that anyone found in possession of illegal weapons or involved in activities that endanger civilians would face firm legal action.
The armed forces also appealed to residents of Salal and neighboring areas to cooperate with security agencies by sharing information and avoiding actions that could disrupt peace. Authorities said community support is essential in maintaining stability and preventing criminal groups from exploiting insecurity. They urged the public to report suspicious activities and to trust the legal process as investigations continue.
Somaliland authorities reiterated their commitment to safeguarding lives and property, noting that security operations would continue where necessary to address threats. They said the government remains focused on strengthening law enforcement, improving intelligence gathering, and working closely with communities to ensure lasting peace. While acknowledging the challenges involved, officials expressed confidence that continued cooperation between civilians and security forces would help prevent further violence and bring those responsible for crimes to justice.
