Somaliland police have arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting a resident in Hargeisa earlier this week. The suspect, identified as Aabi Muse Elmi, is accused of killing Abdi Haybe Khayre on Tuesday morning in the Ahmed Dhagax neighborhood. According to police reports, the incident occurred as the victim was walking along a street when the suspect allegedly opened fire, striking him fatally before fleeing the scene.

Authorities immediately launched a large-scale search operation following the shooting, mobilizing police units and collaborating with local communities and military forces. After several hours of pursuit, Elmi was captured outside Hargeisa by members of the Somaliland military. The military later handed him over to the police for further investigation.

In an official statement, the Somaliland Police Command confirmed the arrest and praised the coordinated efforts that led to the suspect’s capture. “A long operation and effort by the Somaliland Police, in cooperation with the community and the military forces to which he belonged, succeeded in arresting the suspect,” the statement read. Police officials highlighted that the success of the operation was due to swift communication and cooperation among security forces and local residents who shared critical information about the suspect’s whereabouts.

Authorities also expressed their appreciation to the public for their assistance, emphasizing that community collaboration remains vital in ensuring safety and bringing offenders to justice. The General Command of the Police Force thanked the Somaliland community and military personnel for their support, noting that such partnerships strengthen public trust and help maintain peace across the region.

Police said the suspect will be presented before judicial authorities immediately as investigations continue to determine the motive behind the killing. While the cause of the shooting remains unclear, detectives are examining whether it was a personal dispute, a targeted attack, or an isolated criminal act. Officials reassured the public that the case is being handled with urgency and transparency to ensure justice for the victim and his family.

Residents of the Ahmed Dhagax area have expressed shock and sadness over the incident, describing the neighborhood as usually calm and peaceful. Community members have urged authorities to continue prioritizing public safety and to take firm action against those who engage in violent crimes. Many locals also praised the police for their quick response and successful apprehension of the suspect before he could escape further.

This latest arrest underscores Somaliland’s growing efforts to combat crime and strengthen the rule of law. Over recent months, the police have intensified patrols and investigations to tackle rising security concerns in urban areas. Officials say such actions are part of broader reforms aimed at improving coordination between the police, military, and civilian communities.

The Somaliland Police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting citizens and upholding justice, stressing that anyone involved in violent acts will be held accountable. “No one is above the law, and our forces will continue to work tirelessly to ensure peace and stability,” a senior police spokesperson said.

As the investigation continues, the family of the late Abdi Haybe Khayre is calling for a fair and transparent trial to uncover the full circumstances surrounding his death. The case has drawn widespread attention in Hargeisa, with many urging the government to continue enhancing community policing and crime prevention measures.
