Ethiopia’s lower house of parliament has authorized the declaration of a state of emergency in response to the continued violence in the country’s Amhara region.

The emergency action was announced by the government earlier this month.

The parliament’s session was typically not aired, but the decree was accepted with a majority vote, according to a report posted on the House’s Facebook page.

Rights organizations have already raised worry about the decree, citing prior declarations of state of emergency that resulted in allegations of abuses and mass detentions.
