The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), an East African bloc, has agreed to send a mission to Sudan to begin talks to end the ongoing hostilities and restore peace and stability.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held urgent virtual talks with leaders of IGAD member states to address the crisis in Sudan between the army and paramilitary forces.

On Saturday, President Mohamud issued a statement expressing serious worry about the political violence in Sudan. The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has encouraged Somali citizens in Sudan to exercise caution and maintain contact with the ministry and the embassy.

“They can register on the ministry’s website if they need help,” the ministry noted.

The African Union Commission’s President, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has urged all parties in Sudan to stop damaging the country and work toward an end to hostilities.

The Sudanese war is the result of disagreements over a proposed transition to civilian rule following the 2019 coup that deposed former President Omar Hassan al-Bashir. Another coup in 2021 resulted in the removal of the country’s civilian prime minister.

Sudan’s biggest paramilitary force, the RSF, has accused the army of carrying out a plot devised by al-Bashir supporters and of trying a coup themselves.
