According to diplomatic sources, Turkey’s new Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan talked by phone with his Egyptian colleague Sameh Shoukry on Sunday to discuss bilateral relations.
Shoukry also congratulated Fidan on his election.
Fidan took over the presidency from Mevlut Cavusoglu earlier this week. For 13 years, he led Turkey’s National Intelligence Organisation (MIT).
Cavusoglu, Turkey’s then-foreign minister, stated in April that Turkey and Egypt had agreed to improve bilateral ties and elevate diplomatic relations to the highest level.
“We are taking concrete steps to elevate representation to that of embassies.” “We will inform you with a joint statement in the coming period,” Cavusoglu said at a news conference in Ankara with his Egyptian colleague Shoukry.
Since 2013, Turkey and Egypt have maintained diplomatic ties at the level of charges d’affaires.
Cavusoglu said during his March 18 visit to Cairo, the first by a Turkish foreign minister in 11 years, that the two nations wanted to elevate diplomatic relations to the highest level “as soon as possible.”
