Former U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a strong public attack on tech billionaire Elon Musk, calling him a “train wreck” after Musk announced plans to create a new political group called the America Party. The two once shared a close relationship, but tensions have grown in recent months, especially over political disagreements and policy clashes.
Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his disappointment in Musk’s recent actions and direction. “I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks,” Trump wrote. He criticized Musk’s idea of forming a third political party, warning that such efforts have historically failed in the United States.
The former president said Musk’s move would only bring “complete and total disruption and chaos” at a time when the political scene is already tense. Trump added, “We already have enough chaos with the Radical Left Democrats, who have lost their confidence and their minds. Republicans, on the other hand, are a smooth-running machine that just passed the biggest bill of its kind in our country’s history.”
Trump suggested that Musk’s political move may be influenced by personal financial reasons. Their fallout appears to be connected to a government spending bill that removed a proposed Electric Vehicle (EV) mandate. Trump claimed Musk, who owns EV company Tesla, opposed the bill because it could hurt his business.
“The bill is great,” Trump said, “but it eliminates the ridiculous EV mandate, which would have forced everyone to buy electric cars very soon. I’ve opposed that from the start. People should have the freedom to choose — whether it’s gasoline-powered cars, hybrids, or other new technologies. No one should be forced into buying EVs.”
Musk, for his part, announced the creation of the America Party over the weekend. He said the party would be focused on restoring freedom and fighting against what he sees as wasteful government spending and corruption. In a social media post, he wrote: “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system — not a real democracy.”
He added, “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Trump’s comments signal a growing rift between him and one of the country’s most influential tech figures. Once allies — with Musk even advising Trump during his presidency — the two have grown increasingly distant due to differences in politics and policy. As the 2024 election approaches and the political landscape becomes more crowded, new voices like Musk’s may shake things up — but Trump has made it clear he sees the America Party as a dangerous distraction.
Whether Musk’s new political movement will gain traction remains to be seen. Third parties in the U.S. have historically struggled to achieve major success. But with increasing voter frustration over both Republicans and Democrats, some believe a fresh alternative could attract public interest — even if it draws criticism from powerful figures like Trump.
