Turkey applauded the United Nations Security Council’s decision to lift a weapons embargo on Somalia on Saturday.
“We hope that this historic decision will usher in a new era of peace, prosperity, and strong hopes for Somalia’s future,” the Foreign Ministry stated in a statement.
The Turkish government said that it “as always, will continue to stand by the people of Somalia and support Somalia in this new era.”
The declaration came after the Security Council unanimously voted on Friday to ease the final limits on arms transfers to Somalia’s government and security forces.
As a response to the then-conflict and increasing humanitarian situation in Somalia, the Security Council imposed a broad and complete arms embargo on the country in 1992.
