U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held a phone discussion on Friday, sharing concerns over security challenges in Haiti and Somalia, as well as the ongoing situation regarding detainees held by the Houthis in Yemen. The call underscored the importance of international support in addressing these critical regions.

Gains by Multinational Security Support in Haiti

During the conversation, Blinken highlighted the progress made by the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti. The U.S. has supported this initiative as a response to Haiti’s escalating gang violence and social unrest, which intensified following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021. Blinken emphasized the need to eventually transition the MSS mission to a U.N. peacekeeping operation, a step the Haitian government has advocated for in order to establish a sustainable security structure.

Focus on African Union Mission in Somalia

Somalia also featured prominently in the conversation, with both Blinken and Guterres considering funding options for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission (AUSSOM) in Somalia. The country has struggled with ongoing terrorist activities, particularly from the al-Shabaab group linked to al-Qaeda. Both leaders acknowledged that sustained international funding and support for AUSSOM are essential for countering the persistent security threats in the region.

Concerns Over Detainees Held by Houthis in Yemen

The call also addressed the humanitarian and diplomatic concerns arising from the detention of U.N. and NGO personnel by the Houthis in Yemen. Blinken underscored the need to ensure the safe release of these staff members, who have been held since their detention on June 6. The conversation highlighted the U.N.’s efforts to secure their release, which remains a critical issue amid Yemen’s ongoing conflict.

    Continued U.S.-U.N. Collaboration

Blinken expressed gratitude to Guterres for his leadership and commitment to addressing these pressing global security challenges. This collaboration between the U.S. and U.N. is seen as vital for supporting vulnerable regions and advancing diplomatic solutions.
