KAMPALA, UGANDA – February 17, 2025 – A coalition of Uganda’s top opposition leaders, led by National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the government demanding the immediate release of Dr. Kizza Besigye and other political prisoners. The ultimatum comes amid growing concerns over Besigye’s deteriorating health while in detention.
Health Concerns
Opposition leaders have expressed grave concerns about Besigye’s health, stating that he is in a critical condition and unable to leave his bed. They have called for urgent medical treatment, emphasizing that his continued detention poses a serious risk to his well-being.

Legal and Political Context
The ultimatum follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that civilians cannot be tried in military courts, raising legal questions about the continued detention of Besigye and his aide Obeid Lutale. The opposition has warned of nationwide dissent if the government fails to comply with their demands within the given timeframe.
Opposition’s Stance
During a joint press briefing at the NUP headquarters, Bobi Wine and other opposition figures emphasized the need for immediate action to secure the release of Besigye and other political prisoners. They have vowed to announce further measures if their demands are not met, urging the public to support their cause.
