KAMPALA, UGANDA – February 18, 2025 – Uganda has discharged eight Ebola patients who have successfully recovered from the virus. Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng announced that the patients were released after responding well to treatment. However, 265 individuals who had contact with the initial cases remain under strict quarantine for monitoring.
Outbreak Details
The outbreak, declared last month, was attributed to the Sudan strain of Ebola, for which no vaccine currently exists. The lone fatality was a male nurse who died at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala. His relatives were among those later hospitalized with Ebola.

Monitoring and Response
Authorities continue to monitor the 265 contacts in Kampala, Jinja, and Mbale. None of these contacts have exhibited symptoms so far, but they will remain under quarantine for 21 days from the time of their contact or exposure. Health authorities, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), have rolled out a comprehensive response to halt the spread of the virus.
WHO’s Role
The WHO has deployed 47 health emergency experts and delivered 7 tons of emergency medical supplies to support Uganda’s response. A clinical study to test the safety and efficacy of a trial vaccine for the Sudan strain is also underway.
