United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Secretary-General Hissein Taha have strongly condemned the attack on Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s convoy in Mogadishu on Tuesday.
In a statement, Guterres expressed his deep sorrow for the victims of the attack. His Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, conveyed the Secretary-General’s condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wished a quick recovery to those who were injured. Guterres reassured Somalia of the UN’s unwavering support in its fight against terrorism and its efforts to bring peace and stability to the country.
OIC Secretary-General Hissein Taha also spoke out against the attack, calling it a horrific act of violence. He extended his condolences to the Somali government, the victims’ families, and the people of Somalia. He also wished the injured a speedy recovery. Taha reaffirmed the OIC’s commitment to standing by Somalia and helping it tackle security challenges.
The attack took place near El-Gab junction in Mogadishu when a convoy carrying President Mohamud was targeted. The explosion killed at least eight people, including journalist Mohamed Abukar Dabashe. Dabashe was inside a nearby building that collapsed due to the force of the blast.
The militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack through its Telegram channel. The group stated that its fighters targeted the convoy as it was leaving the presidential palace and heading toward the airport.
Despite the attempt on his life, President Mohamud remained unharmed. Two senior government and military officials confirmed that he was safe. Hours after the attack, President Mohamud traveled to Aden Yabaal district in the Middle Shabelle region to oversee ongoing military operations against Al-Shabaab and to boost the morale of Somali troops fighting the militant group.
The attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in Somalia as the government continues its fight against Al-Shabaab. The Somali administration, along with international allies like the UN and the OIC, remains determined to improve security and bring lasting peace to the country.
The Somali people continue to endure violence at the hands of Al-Shabaab, which frequently carries out deadly attacks targeting government officials, security forces, and civilians. The government, with the support of international partners, is actively working to eliminate the threat posed by the militant group and to ensure a safer future for the country.
In response to the attack, Somali security forces have tightened security measures in Mogadishu and other parts of the country. The government is urging citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces in the fight against terrorism.
The international community has also voiced its concern over the rising violence in Somalia. The UN, OIC, and other global partners continue to support Somalia’s efforts to strengthen security and counter terrorism.
As Somalia moves forward, the government remains committed to defeating Al-Shabaab and bringing peace and stability to the nation. The resilience of the Somali people and their determination to rebuild their country remain strong despite ongoing challenges.
