KHARTOUM, SUDAN – February 27, 2025 – A senior United Nations official has called for urgent international efforts to protect civilians in the Sudan Zamzam displacement camp, as violence intensifies in the region. Edem Wosornu, Director of Operations and Advocacy at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), highlighted the dire situation during a briefing to the UN Security Council.
Escalating Violence
Recent satellite imagery confirms the use of heavy weaponry in and around Zamzam camp, leading to the destruction of key market facilities. The escalating violence has forced the World Food Programme (WFP) to halt food assistance operations, putting thousands at risk of starvation.

Humanitarian Impact
The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has displaced over 15 million people, with nearly 500,000 residing in Zamzam camp. The deteriorating security situation has also led to the suspension of activities by Doctors Without Borders (MSF), further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Call for Action
Wosornu urged the international community to take immediate action to ensure the protection of civilians and facilitate humanitarian access. The UN’s 2025 response plan for Sudan requires $6 billion to support millions of people affected by the conflict.
