The presidential elections in Somaliland on November 13, 2024, mark a significant democratic milestone for the region that declared independence from Somalia in 1991. Despite lacking international recognition, Somaliland showcased strong voter turnout, reflecting its population’s commitment to democratic principles. Originally scheduled for 2022, these elections were delayed due to economic and political challenges.

Somaliland Candidates Compete Amid Regional Tensions

Outgoing President Muse Bihi Abdi of the Kulmiye Party seeks re-election, competing against Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Waddani Party) and Faisal Ali Warabe (UCID Party), both of whom emphasize reform and national unity.

Somaliland Election Proceedings and Awaited Results

According to Muse Hassan Haji Yusuf, chairman of the Electoral Commission, polling stations closed without incident, and vote counting is underway. Citizens are urged to await the official results, expected on November 21, to prevent misinformation.

    Strategic Importance and Regional Disputes

The elections occur amidst disputes over the control of Berbera port, vital to Somaliland’s economy. A proposed Ethiopian agreement for exclusive port access has heightened tensions with Somalia, which claims Somaliland as its territory.

Somaliland’s peaceful elections and strong voter engagement demonstrate resilience and aspirations for sovereignty. Regional stability remains tied to resolving economic and territorial disputes.
