Police launch investigation after viral video shows a widow being attacked at her late husband’s funeral. Authorities vow to bring all perpetrators to justice

Three individuals have been arrested after they were caught on video assaulting a widow during her husband’s burial in Nyamira County. The disturbing footage, which went viral on social media, caused public outrage and prompted immediate action from the National Police Service (NPS).

According to a statement from NPS, the incident took place on Friday, March 21, in Kiambere, Mwongorisi Sub-Location, Nyamira County. The video showed the woman being physically attacked in front of mourners, an act that authorities strongly condemned as inhumane and lacking basic human dignity.

“The National Police Service has noted with utmost concern a disturbing video circulating on social media, which shows a woman being physically assaulted at what is believed to be a burial ceremony. This incident is not only unfortunate but also deeply regrettable, as it is devoid of civility and basic human dignity,” the statement read.

Following the viral video, law enforcement officers launched an investigation and managed to locate the victim. Three suspects were swiftly arrested and are now in police custody as they await legal processing and court arraignment. The police thanked members of the public for their cooperation, which played a key role in identifying and arresting the culprits.

“As a Service, we remain committed to upholding law and order,” NPS assured the public.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) provided further details about the incident, revealing that the suspects had forced the woman to participate in traditional rituals against her will. During this forced participation, she was assaulted, leaving her with visible injuries.

The victim was previously married to the deceased for over nine years, but they had separated due to undisclosed reasons. She had been out of touch with the family until recently when her mother-in-law contacted her following the tragic death of her ex-husband in a road accident. The mother-in-law invited her to the funeral and asked her to bring her children so they could attend their father’s final rites.

However, what was meant to be a solemn moment turned into a nightmare for the woman. Reports indicate that she was subjected to cultural rituals that she did not consent to, and when she resisted, she was physically attacked by some of the mourners.

The shocking act has sparked widespread condemnation, with many Kenyans calling for justice and an end to harmful traditional practices that violate people’s rights. Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing, and efforts are in place to track down and arrest any other individuals involved in the assault.

As the case progresses, law enforcement agencies have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting victims and ensuring that those responsible face justice. The widow is receiving medical attention and support, while authorities continue working to bring all suspects to book.
