A young doctor in Galkayo, Dr. Omar Abdi Dahir, was killed on Tuesday night in an attack linked to clan violence, sparking outrage and grief in the community. His death marks the second time in recent years that a medical professional has lost their life to clan-related clashes in the divided town.

Witnesses said Dr. Omar was caught in the middle of a deadly confrontation between rival clan militias in the Horumar neighborhood. The violence, which left at least two others dead and several wounded, reportedly stemmed from an earlier clash in the Towfiiq area of Mudug region. What began as a localized dispute quickly escalated into bloodshed that claimed the life of the young doctor, who had dedicated himself to serving patients in the town.

Security forces from both Puntland and Galmudug rushed to the scene in an attempt to separate the fighting groups, but tensions remain high in Galkayo. Residents say the atmosphere is tense and fear that more violence could follow if the situation is not carefully managed.

The killing has revived painful memories of a similar tragedy two years ago, when another doctor, Dr. Sakariye Abdi Jama, was gunned down in Galkayo after his medical center was attacked. For many in the community, losing yet another health worker to violence feels like history repeating itself.

Doctors in conflict-affected areas like Galkayo play a crucial role, often working under dangerous and stressful conditions to provide healthcare to civilians caught between warring groups. The loss of Dr. Omar is not just a personal tragedy for his family and friends, but also a devastating blow to a community that already struggles with limited medical resources.

Community elders and civil society groups have called for calm and urged local leaders to intervene to stop the cycle of revenge killings that continues to claim innocent lives. Many have also appealed to both Puntland and Galmudug authorities to strengthen security, protect civilians, and ensure justice for those who have been killed.

Dr. Omar’s death is a stark reminder of the human cost of clan conflict in Somalia. As the town mourns another life cut short, the urgent need for reconciliation, accountability, and protection of those who serve the community has never been clearer.
