    On Monday, a powerful earthquake struck Japan.

    The magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the Izu-Ogasawara Islands, south of Tokyo, at roughly 0449GMT, according to the US Geological Survey.

    The depth of the earthquake was assessed to be 409.1 kilometers (254.2 miles).

    The islands are 1,000 kilometers (621.3 miles) south of the metropolis.
