Somali leadership reaffirms commitment to military forces as airstrikes eliminate key Al-Shabaab operatives in ongoing security operations
Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre visited the National Army Hospital and Erdogan Hospital on Wednesday night to show support for injured soldiers and local army personnel fighting against the Al-Shabaab militant group.
During his visit, the Prime Minister met with the wounded soldiers and their doctors, offering prayers for their speedy recovery. He expressed gratitude for their sacrifices and assured them of the government’s unwavering support.
“The one who kills the Khawarij or is killed by them has won. As the Messenger of Allah said, they are a group that has misunderstood religion,” he stated. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of modern hospitals to rehabilitate injured soldiers, acknowledging that Somalia is engaged in a tough battle against groups seeking to disrupt peace and stability. “Soon, your country and your people will be rewarded with peace,” he added.
He encouraged the troops to remain resilient in their mission to protect Somalia, urging them to continue fighting against terrorist groups like Al-Shabaab and ISIS. He assured them that the government firmly stands behind them, recognizing their bravery and sacrifices.
Earlier this week, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud welcomed some of the wounded soldiers at Mogadishu airport, demonstrating solidarity and appreciation for their service.
Somali army forces, with the backing of international allies, have recently intensified operations against Al-Shabaab, particularly in the Middle Shabelle and Lower Shabelle regions. These efforts led to the killing of nearly 100 militants, including key figures responsible for terrorist activities.
On Wednesday, targeted airstrikes eliminated Farhan Osman Hassan, also known as Jafar Karuur, who was responsible for Al-Shabaab’s explosive operations in Banadir and Lower Shabelle. Another senior figure, Ahmed Gumaar, who managed the group’s financial operations in Lower Shabelle, was also killed.
Just a day earlier, another high-ranking Al-Shabaab leader, who coordinated the group’s combat vehicles in Middle Shabelle, was also eliminated along with dozens of his fighters. These strikes demonstrate the Somali government’s commitment to weakening Al-Shabaab’s leadership and operational capabilities with the support of international partners.
Beyond military action, the government is working on strengthening governance, improving intelligence coordination, and implementing rehabilitation programs for former militants. The goal is to not only defeat Al-Shabaab on the battlefield but also to address the root causes of extremism.
Despite these efforts, Al-Shabaab remains a persistent threat, frequently carrying out suicide bombings and targeted attacks. However, Somali authorities remain determined to eradicate terrorism and restore peace.
Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre’s visit to the injured soldiers highlights the human cost of this war and reinforces the government’s commitment to caring for those who risk their lives for the nation. With continued efforts, Somalia is moving toward a more secure and stable future.
