Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has vowed to maintain a firm grip on security in the region, emphasizing that his administration will not allow any resurgence of militant groups such as Al-Shabaab and ISIS. Speaking at a public gathering in Bosaso, he underscored his government’s commitment to preventing these extremist organizations from re-establishing a foothold in Puntland.
Deni highlighted the recent success of Puntland’s security forces in driving both Al-Shabaab and ISIS out of the Bari region. He reassured traditional elders and community leaders that government troops had effectively dismantled militant strongholds, significantly weakening their influence in the area. He also announced a strategic initiative to build roads in former conflict zones to enhance troop mobility and facilitate civilian movement.
“We have taken back control, and we will not tolerate any further threats to security,” Deni declared, emphasizing his administration’s determination to uphold stability and peace.
As part of his broader security strategy, Deni offered a general amnesty to individuals with past criminal records, signaling his government’s willingness to promote reconciliation. However, he made it clear that anyone who continues to engage in destabilizing activities or maintains ties with extremist groups will face severe consequences.
“On behalf of the government, I have granted a full pardon,” he stated. “But let me be clear—those who disrupt security or collaborate with terrorists will face serious consequences.”
Deni also acknowledged the vital role played by traditional elders in stabilizing Puntland through Operation Hillaac, a government-led initiative aimed at strengthening governance and reinforcing security measures. He noted that the third phase of this operation is currently underway, focusing on consolidating security gains and preventing any resurgence of extremist activities.
With Puntland’s strategic location along the Gulf of Aden, maintaining security in the region is crucial for both Somalia and the broader international community. The presence of Al-Shabaab and ISIS in Somalia has long been a source of concern, particularly given their history of carrying out attacks on civilians, government institutions, and security forces. Deni’s strong stance on counterterrorism aligns with Puntland’s broader efforts to establish itself as a stable and secure autonomous region within Somalia.
His speech comes at a time when security remains a top priority for Puntland’s leadership, as the region seeks to foster economic growth and development. Stability is essential for attracting investment, improving infrastructure, and ensuring the safety of Puntland’s citizens. By reinforcing security measures and working closely with community leaders, the government aims to create an environment where militant groups can no longer thrive.
Deni’s announcement has been met with widespread support from Puntland residents, who have long suffered from the violence and instability caused by extremist factions. Many see the government’s tough stance as a necessary step in ensuring long-term peace and prosperity for the region.
While challenges remain, Puntland’s leadership appears resolute in its commitment to maintaining security and preventing militant groups from regaining strength. With ongoing military operations, infrastructure development, and community engagement, Puntland is taking a proactive approach to counterterrorism and regional stability.
As the fight against extremism continues, the effectiveness of Puntland’s security strategy will be closely watched by both regional and international observers. Deni’s strong message sends a clear signal that Puntland will not tolerate any attempts by Al-Shabaab or ISIS to re-establish themselves in the region.
