Abshir Omar Jama, Somali Foreign Minister, stated on Friday that he addressed the idea of building trade platforms with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, during a meeting in Moscow.

Jama stated during a press conference that the Russian construction of such a platform would allow Russian and Somali trade operators and firms to communicate more effectively and make better use of current prospects.

Lavrov, for his part, stated that Moscow has voiced support for the Somali leadership in state-building, strengthening, and unification, as well as actions to stabilise the internal situation and combat terrorism and extremism.

He believes that progress in this approach will pave the way for more business community cooperation.

“Entrepreneurs from the Russian Federation are interested in the opportunity to come and work together with Somali partners in the fields of energy and mining, as well as other promising areas,” he said.

The Minister emphasised that Russia supports “African solutions to African problems,” as well as taking the African continent’s interests into consideration while discussing UN Security Council reform.

According to Lavrov, “the reform of the UN Security Council should be aimed exclusively at solving the problem of under-representation of developing countries, the countries of the world majority.”

Lavrov also stated that he and Jama addressed the battle against piracy off the coast of Somalia.
