On Monday, after forcing al Shabab extremists to leave the district, Somali government forces assisted by local clan militia forces captured Adan Yabaal, a vital district in the Middle Shabelle region.

As part of the ongoing battle against al Shabab in Middle and Hiiraan, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud confirmed the recapture of the district to state-run media on Tuesday.

Al Shabab has control of Adan Yabaal, which is located about 245 kilometers north of the capital Mogadishu. The district is close to the region’s boundary with Middle Shabelle.

The militants blew up the water wells as they were leaving the district, President Mohamud said, pledging to fix them. Mohamud praised the combined forces that helped free the district as well.

Ruun Nirgood, the lone village in the Middle Shabelle region held by al Shabab, will be freed in the upcoming days because the terrorists’ time had come to an end, according to Mohamud.

In Middle Shabelle’s Adan Yabal area, there have reportedly been two days of intense combat close to the villages of Wartadibi Samatar and Boos Adur.

Following recent rumors that Al Shabaab had left the area, government soldiers proceeded towards the Adan Yabal district to solidify territorial gains.
