Joint Offensive with Clan Militias and International Partners Targets Key Militant Strongholds Across Multiple Regions

In a major step forward in the fight against terrorism, Somali government forces, supported by local clan fighters and international allies, have killed more than 120 al-Shabaab militants, including several senior leaders. The large-scale military operation was carried out over the past 72 hours across multiple regions in Somalia.

Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu on Wednesday, Minister of Defense Ahmed Macalin Fiqi said the successful offensive marked a new and stronger phase in the war against the extremist group. He confirmed that the operations took place in the states of Galmudug, Hirshabelle, Jubbaland, and Southwest, targeting key al-Shabaab bases.

“More than 120 al-Shabaab members, including leaders, were killed in battles and airstrikes,” Minister Fiqi said. “One of them was a high-ranking commander who was behind recent mortar attacks in Mogadishu. He and his bodyguards were among those killed.”

The operation focused on areas known to be strongholds of al-Shabaab, including Geel Gub, Sabiib, Canoole, Barjaale, and Aden Yabaal district. According to officials, these attacks have significantly weakened the group’s ability to plan and carry out further attacks.

Minister Fiqi stressed that although this was a major success, the fight against al-Shabaab is not yet over. He promised that the Somali government would continue to push forward until the militants are completely removed from all regions.

“This is a national war,” he said. “We will not stop. We will continue to liberate every village still under al-Shabaab control. Our goal is to make sure they are gone for good.”

The defense minister also praised the courage and dedication of the Ma’awisley fighters — local clan militias — who have played a key role in fighting al-Shabaab on the front lines. He specifically recognized the efforts of fighters from the Hawadle clan in the Hiiraan region, who have been vital in securing major wins against the group.

Al-Shabaab, a militant group linked to al-Qaeda, has been active in Somalia for over 16 years. The group regularly carries out attacks targeting civilians, government buildings, and military forces. Despite many efforts to defeat them, they have remained a dangerous threat, especially in rural areas where government presence is limited.

However, recent military campaigns led by Somali forces — with help from clan militias and support from international partners such as the African Union and the United States — have put increased pressure on the group.

Security experts say that hitting al-Shabaab’s leadership and taking back key areas could shift the balance in favor of the government. But they also warn that the group could still pose a danger if not fully dismantled.

Minister Fiqi concluded his speech by calling on all Somalis to support the national army and continue cooperating with the government in its fight against terrorism.

“This mission is for all of us,” he said. “Together, we can build a safer and more peaceful Somalia.”

While the recent success brings hope, Somalia still faces serious challenges, including the continued threat of both al-Shabaab and ISIS militants. The government has promised to stay committed to the fight and carry on with its mission until peace is restored across the country.
