This month, the East African Community will send a verification mission to Somalia to assess the country’s fitness to join the Community. According to EAC Secretary General Dr Peter Mathuki, the EAC mission will arrive in Somalia on the 25th of this month to meet with the Somali administration.
This follows a directive from the Summit heads of state to the Council to follow up on the Federal Republic of Somalia’s application to join the Community. According to Dr. Mathuki, Somalia’s lengthy Indian Ocean Red Sea route connecting Africa to the Arabian Peninsula is a thriving economic zone that will provide enormous benefits to the EAC.
