    Weekly Briefing from the Federal Government of Somalia

    1- Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, met with the National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and Countering Terrorist Financing. The discussion focused on the government’s efforts in diminishing the financial power of the Kharijites Al Shabab.

    2- President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Mr. Brian Nelson, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury of the United States in charge of counter-terrorism and the prevention of terrorist finance. During the discussion, the President addressed the Somali government’s efforts to reduce the revenue and finances of the Kharijites Al Shabab.

    3- Mr. Hamsa Abdi Barre, Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, paid a visit to the Turki-Som Military Training Camp, where various units of the Somali Armed Forces are trained.

    4- Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre attended a conference in Mogadishu’s Heliwa District to promote collaboration between communities and national security authorities.

    5- Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre met with Kenyan President William Ruto to discuss making it easier for Somali residents to enter Kenya as well as collaboration in the battle against the Kharijites Al Shabab. The Prime Minister met with President Ruto in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

    6- Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre met with Mohamed Abdi Affey, the Horn of Africa Envoy for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

    7- Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre met Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan in Dar es Salaam and discussed bilateral cooperation and ties.

    8- Members of Somalia’s two houses of the Federal Parliament accepted the modification of the government budget for 2023.

    9- The weekly meeting of the Cabinet examined the country’s security condition, while up to 5 laws were enacted.

    10- Somalia’s Finance Minister, Mr Bihi Iman Cige, and Russia’s Deputy Finance Minister, Timur Igorevich Maksimov, signed a deal in which Russia erased Somalia a debt of $684 million.

    11- In Rome, Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Mr Abshir Omar Jama, and Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister signed a cooperation pact.

    12- Somalia’s Ministry of Finance has welcomed the World Bank’s $75 million grant for budget help. According to the government, the measure will stimulate efforts to expand the economy and reform financial management.

    13- Somalia’s Minister of Defence, Mr. Abdiqadir Mohamed Nur, informed the Federal Parliament on the necessity of Somalia’s participation in the East African Brigade Forces.

    14- Mr. Hassan Maallim Mohamud, Somalia’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, has signed the National Policy on Children’s Age Verification.

    15- The Somali National Forces, with the assistance of foreign partners, conducted a combat operation between the Middle Shabelle and Galgudud districts, killing over 100 Kharijites Al Shabab and destroying enemy vehicles and other equipment.
    16- The Mogadishu Regional Court continues to hear corruption accusations against government officials.

    17- The Constitution Review Committee has begun a process to consider the National Consultation Forum’s suggestion.

    Mr. Yusuf Hussein Jimale (Madale), Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, attended the announcement ceremony of the results of the 8th grade exams for the year 2022/2023.

    19- Somalia’s Security Minister, Dr. Mohamed Sheikh Ali, met with the Upper House Security and Defence Committee of the Federal Parliament of Somalia to answer concerns about the ministry’s performance.

    Major General Ibrahim Sheikh Muhudin Addow, commander of the Somali National Army, paid a visit to the military camps of General Daud and General Dhegabadan on the outskirts of Mogadishu.

    21- Somalia’s Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Ali Haji Adan, launched an event commemorating World Breastfeeding Week.

    22- The senior commanders of the African Union troops in AMISOM met to review the first phase of the departure of ATMIS soldiers from Somalia and to plan for the second phase, which is due to be completed next month.

    23- According to the Banadir Regional Administration, the demolition of a diplomatic facility inhabited by people in Mogadishu was prompted by a request from the Italian government, which legally owns the area and wishes to restart operations.

    24- The Somali National Army and South West State Darwish troops conducted an operation in El Dhun in the Goof Gadud Burey district of Bay region, killing more than 60 members of the Kharijites Al Shabab militia.

    25- Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Abdihakim Hassan Ashkir, met with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Envoy, Mohamed Abdi Afey.

    26- The Banadir Region Court of Appeal convicted foreign fishermen to $12,000 in fines and impounded their fishing vessels.

    27- A quarterly conference for the coordination of health initiatives organised by Somalia’s Ministry of Health has begun in Mogadishu, and will examine the country’s health progress.

    28- Mr. Yusuf Hussein Jimale (Madale), Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, presided at a special meeting to accelerate security in the capital.

    29- Somalia’s Deputy Defence Minister, Mr. Abdifatah Qasim, has confirmed the arrest of 14 policemen in connection with the investigation of the explosion at Jalle Siyad College.

    30- The Somali administration has received humanitarian help from the Italian government for those displaced by the Las Aanod violence.
