Somalia’s police chief was fired on Thursday after a unanimous decision by the country’s cabinet.

General Abdi Hassan Hijar, who had led Somalia’s police force since 2019, was sacked. General Sulub Ahmed Firn, his replacement, formally took office on Friday.

Gen. Ahmed was previously the federal Deputy Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation.

The high-level security reshuffle came just days after Al Shabaab killed at least six people in an attack on the Banadir Regional Administration offices, which contains the Mogadishu Mayor’s office.

With the help of clan militias and US drone strikes, Somalia has launched a military onslaught against the Al Qaeda-linked armed rebel group Al Shabaab.
